Hamilton Russell only make two Estate wines in Hemel-En-Aarde, their Pinot Noir & Chardonnay, in the cool surroundings of Walker Bay.
Both are about the closest you can get to being Burgundian in style, and both are world class. The Hamilton Russell Vineyards Pinot Noir is youthful and I’d recommend trying one now, to check you love it as much as I do, and then lay several down for a while. It has a long life ahead of it yet.
Instead of opting for merely a sweet fruit bomb of a red, Hamilton Russell have produced a Pinot Noir with a wonderfully spicy, savoury edge to match the ripe plum & black cherry flavours. Serious kit and a serious alternative to some more expensive red Burgundies out there.
About the wine
“Emul Ross and proprietor Anthony Hamilton Russell are not afraid to make Pinot noirs with structure and staying power, even in a wetter vintage like 2023. This has plenty of colour, lots of spicy Francois Freres oak, some underlying ferrous trip, savoury tannins and flavours of plum and black cherry. Substantial, but give it time.” 94 Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2024.
“…this is sensual and elegant, showing what beauty there is in young Pinot. With its signature purity, spice and touch of savouriness, it will age magnificently, too. And, again, with Burgundy prices going bonkers, this is an utter must for lovers of top-notch sophisticated Pinot.” Jonathan Ray, The Spectator, April 2024
